SAMUEL ANDREWS (1767-1807)
Portrait Miniature of a Gentleman
Watercolor en grisaille on ivory, H. 3 7/8 inches
In the original burnished horn frame, 6 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches

ANDREWS spent most of his professional life in India, arriving in Madras in 1791. By 1795 he was in Calcutta where his celebrated clientele included the Marquis Wellesley and Lord Cornwallis.

This superbly crafted likeness is sufficiently trompe l'oeil to have convinced several viewers that it was a marble relief.
