NORTHWEST COAST CARVED PIPE
Tlingit, circa 1850
Wood, abalone, and gun metal
L. 5 inches

IHIS haunting image, in which a man and a bird merge into a single creature, encompasses a full measure of the spiritual potency and aesthetic magic of Northwest Coast Indian art. Several Tlingit carved wooden pipes, all from the Peabody Museum at Harvard, are reproduced in Bill Holm's Soft Gold, the Fur Trade and Cultural Exchange on the Northwest Coast of America, Oregon Historical Society, 1982, pps. 126-131. None is superior to the present example.
