  | LOHAN, or Disciple of the Buddha Chinese, 15th Century Lacquered Wood, H. 39 inches N temple settings, three dimensional images of the seated Buddha are often flanked by sculptures of his close disciples or Lohans. This near-life sized figure, perhaps representing a devotee named Kasyapa, presents the viewer with the very model of Buddhist serenity and compassion. The poised and graceful gesture of the hands and the radiance of its gaze artfully express the visible attributes of Enlightenment.
Of carved and painted wood, figures of this type are very rare and seldom seen in the market. This 15th Century example was collected by a diplomat who retired to Maine.
