  | MAURICE BECHET Portrait of a Gentleman in His Library Pastel on canvas, 25 1/2 x 21 inches Signed and dated 1893 AURICE Bechet's extensive exhibition history includes entries in the Salon des Independants from 1905 through 1932 and the Salon d'Automne from 1913 through 1921. Bechet clearly shared artistic concerns with Degas and much is owed to that great master.
This pastel, which evokes Degas' Portrait of Edmond Duranty in his Library, demonstrates Bechet's impressive handling of the medium as well as a sympathetic and penetrating understanding of his pensive subject.
