THOMAS ALLOM (1804-1872)
The Imperial Traveling Palace at Huo-kew-shan or Tiger Mound, Henan Province, circa 1840
Pencil and sepia wash, 5 x 7 1/2 inches

THOMAS Allom was the finest of all Western artists working in 19th Century China. He probably owed something of the precision of his line to his training as an architect, assisting Sir Charles Barry in the designs for the Houses of Parliament.

Depicted here is the palace at Huo-kew-shan in Henan province, famous for its romantic scenery, a way station for the emperor Daoguang"s enjoyment when he traveled in this part of his realm. Such "traveling palaces" were built throughout China along the great highroads that connected the principal cities of the empire. Some of these exceeded in sumptuousness and picturesque accompaniments the much celebrated palace and gardens in Beijing. This drawing is reproduced as an engraving in Allom's China Illustrated, the best known study on China in the 19th Century.
