

  |  FIGURAL PIPE Haida, circa 1865 Walrus ivory, abalone, bullet casings, and wood L. 5 x H. 2 3/4 inches HIS rare Northwest Coast item combines indigenous and trade materials to form a unique artifact that speaks directly of the collision of Indian and Anglo-European cultures. The face of a white man is carved out of native walrus ivory and the metal fittings are of reformed bullet casings. Tiny nails indicate the eyes and teeth. The ears, done in abalone, are attached by pieces of brass.
