  | UNIDENTIFIED ARTIST A view of the State Penitentiary of Kentucky- Place of confinement of Officers-prisoners AD 1813 Watercolor, 17 3/4 x 11 1/8 inches HIS extremely proficient watercolor takes its title from a contemporary inscription (above) on the verso. Showing a rather serene place of confinement set among verdant hills, the artist has chosen to depict himself in the foreground next to an intriguing gentleman who seems to be pointing out the scene to him. Minute figures of British officers, as well as a lady in white about to enter the prison, are in the middle distance. This scenario is acutely observed and painted with a mastery of precise definition.
