MUGHAL 2nd quarter of the 17th century
Carub Chan Phisician to Shah-jahan
Gouache and gold, 5 7/8 x 3 3/4 inches

IDENTIFIED as above on the verso in ink in a 17th or 18th century hand, this painting demonstrates a technical skill that includes such minute details as smallpox scars on the face of the subject. Probably from an album of court subjects, a practice especially favored by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir (1605-1627), who required profile portrait studies of his satraps, this example follows the traditional format of a standing figure against a green background.
