  | LUCA CAMBIASO, (1527-1585) Saint John the Evangelist borne aloft by an eagle, circa 1570 Pen and ink, 14 x 9 1/2 inches S this drawing amply demonstrates, Cambiaso was a marvelously fluent draftsman. Obviously quickly executed, this expansive image, although thoroughly 16th century in conception, stylistically prefigures drawings done in the 18th century and even the 20th century. It is remarkably similar to a Cambiaso drawing, The Assumption of the Virgin, in the Bowdoin College Museum of Art (cf. David P. Becker, Old Master Drawings at Bowdoin College, 1985, p. 78).
