ESCHLER studied in Italy but his work is thoroughly German. He became a citizen of Nurnburg in 1557. This is one of the select number of medals chosen for inclusion in the The Art of the Medal, by Mark Jones published by the British Museum in 1979, figure 82, and, was included in the 1994 exhibition, The Currency of Fame, figure 119, catalogue by Stephen K. Schur, published by the Frick Collection and The National Gallery of Art. That it should have been chosen for these celebrated compendia is testimony to the high regard in which this medal is held. $6,750
